Paver patio being laid with a fire pit ring in a Florida back yard

Hardscaping in Spring Hill

Hardscape contractor in Spring Hill for patios and pavers

Paver patios, walkways and fire pits built on a proper base, so they stay flat through summer storms and shifting sand.

  • Base prep matched to sandy, limestone-backed ground
  • Layouts that work around oak roots and pool cages
  • Material choices that stay cooler underfoot

Step 1 of 3

What do you need?

What does a hardscape contractor do?

Hardscaping is the solid, non-plant part of a yard: patios, walkways, driveway borders, steps, seat walls and fire pits. A hardscape contractor in Spring Hill plans the layout, digs out the area, builds the base, lays the surface and finishes the edges. The goal is a surface that stays flat and drains well for many summers.

Pavers are the most common choice here. They are made of concrete or clay and set in sand, so a crack in one unit does not run through the whole patio. Individual pavers can be lifted and reset if a pipe, root or settling problem needs attention. That is a real advantage on sandy, limestone-backed ground, where small shifts can happen over time.

Many projects connect to the rest of the yard. A new patio might need a fresh planting bed around it, which we cover under landscape design.

How is a paver patio built on Spring Hill sand?

Spring Hill sand looks like an easy base, but loose sand alone will not hold a patio. The sand has to be dug out to firm ground, then rebuilt in layers.

  1. Excavate the footprint and remove roots, old turf and soft material.
  2. Compact the soil underneath with a plate compactor.
  3. Add crushed aggregate in thin lifts, compacting each one, to form a firm base several inches deep.
  4. Spread a thin bedding layer of sand and screed it flat with a slight slope away from the house.
  5. Set the pavers, cut the edges and install edge restraints.
  6. Sweep in joint sand and compact the surface.

Skipping the base work is the usual reason a patio sinks or ripples within a few seasons. Water running under the edge can also wash fine sand away, so slope and edge restraint matter as much as the pavers you pick.

What about walkways, fire pits and rust stains?

Walkways follow the same base steps, but they are narrower, so the edges carry more of the load. Curves look natural in a Florida yard and avoid cutting through tree roots. Where a path crosses a swale or low spot, we plan the drainage first so the path does not become a puddle.

Fire pits

A fire pit is usually a paver ring on a patio or a small pad of its own. Gas models need a line run by a qualified trade, and wood-burning ones are limited by county burn rules, dry-season burn bans and many HOA covenants. Check those before you pick a design. Keep the pit well away from oak limbs, pool cages and the house.

Rust stains

If your sprinklers run on well water, orange rust stains can show up on light pavers and walls. Aim heads away from new surfaces and ask about a sealer. Lighter pavers also stay cooler under bare feet, which helps near a pool.

Paver work is priced by area, but the final number moves with several things.

  • Size and shape. Curves and cuts take more time than a straight rectangle.
  • Paver type. Basic concrete units cost less than thick travertine or specialty clay.
  • Base depth. Driveways and soft spots need more excavation and aggregate.
  • Access. Hauling material through a gate or around a pool cage by hand adds labor.
  • Extras. Steps, seat walls, lighting, drains and sealing all add to the scope.
  • Site prep. Tree roots, old concrete or grade changes may call for a retaining wall or drainage fix first.

Get the base depth and the paver brand written into the quote. If the quote leaves out the base, a lower price may only mean a thinner job. Ask to see a contractor's license and insurance before work begins.

How long does it take, and when should you call?

A small patio or short walkway may take a few days. A larger patio with steps and a fire pit can run a week or two, depending on size, delivery times and rain. Summer storms can stop work for part of a day.

What to expect on the day

Expect the noise of a plate compactor and piles of aggregate and pavers in the driveway. Crews mark the layout, dig, build the base, then lay the pavers. Please keep pets and children away from the work area. Joint sand gets swept in at the end, and the crew will tell you when furniture can go back.

When should you call?

Call before your HOA deadline, before you order stone, or when an old slab is cracked or sinking. If you want to see every service first, visit our Spring Hill landscaping home page.

Questions about landscaping in Spring Hill

Are pavers a good choice in Florida?

They suit Florida well. Pavers handle heat and heavy rain, and a damaged unit can be lifted and replaced without breaking out a slab. They also let small amounts of water pass through the joints. The key is a deep, compacted base. Poor base work, not the paver itself, is what usually causes problems.

Do I need a permit for a paver patio in Spring Hill?

A simple ground-level patio often does not, but rules depend on size, location and what is attached. Covered structures, walls, gas lines and anything near a drainage easement can trigger review. Your HOA may also need to approve it. Check with Hernando County and your association before work starts.

Can pavers handle oak and pine tree roots?

Roots can lift any surface over time. We keep the dig shallow near big trunks, avoid cutting large roots, and sometimes curve a path or shrink a patio to protect a tree. Pavers have the advantage that a lifted section can be reset later. Ask an arborist before major digging near a mature oak.

How do I stop weeds and ants in my paver joints?

Polymeric joint sand locks the joints and slows weeds and ants, but no joint stays perfect forever. Sweep off leaf and pine needle litter, which grows weeds, and re-sand when joints open up. Some owners seal the surface for easier cleaning and stain resistance. Sealing is optional and needs reapplying.

Can I have a fire pit in my Spring Hill yard?

Often yes, but check first. Hernando County and the state forest service can restrict open burning during dry periods, and many HOAs ban wood fires or limit size. Gas fire pits are usually easier to approve. Keep any pit clear of oak branches, pool cages, fences and the house.

Should I seal my pavers?

Sealing can deepen color, resist stains and help hold joint sand, which is useful if you have rust from well water or drop oak leaves. It also needs to be redone every few years, and a poor sealer can look shiny or blotchy. Ask about the product and how often it must be reapplied.
